How To Replace Your White Lightning

WL 5,000 and WL 10,000 Series Flashtubes

The flashtube in your White Lightning Unit is simple to replace, just follow these easy instructions.  If you have any difficulties, we're here for you!  You can call us Toll Free at 1-800-443-5542, Monday through Friday, from 9:00am to 5:00pm (CST) and we'll help you.

1. Turn your unit OFF and unplug it from your electrical outlet.  Wait five minutes to make sure that the unit does not have any power stored in the capacitors before handling it.  To fully discharge the unit, place both power switches in the OUT position, then wait for the unit to cool.  Failure to discharge the units may result in a shock hazard, even when the units are disconnected.

2.  Remove the modeling lamp...it unscrews out like a household light bulb.  You should use a small piece of cloth or tissue to remove the lamp so that you do not get any of your finger oils on the bulb.

3. Take a piece of cloth or tissue and pull the flashtube straight out of the unit.  (You'll want to use a cloth or tissue as well here, as the tube may be warm, and you will not want to get finger oils on the outside.)  The best way to do this is to pull on the center metal band/contact with a pair of small insulated pliers.  Note that the center contact of the flashtube is only lightly crimped onto the glass envelope, and may appear loose.  This is normal.  When properly seated, the center contacts must be seated on the tube, and in contact with the silver painted stripe on the glass.

4.  To install the new tube, hold the glass part of the tube in your hands with the three leads sticking out.  Again, you may want to use a cloth for handling the tube.  Make sure that the three leads are straight; they may need to be straightened with either your fingers or needle nose pliers.  Also ensure that the center contact is seated on the silver painted stripe.  Next, line each of the leads up with the socket on the unit, and insert the tube by gently and evenly pushing down until the tube is seated all the way down in the unit, and is square with the back of the reflector.

5.  Screw the modeling lamp back in slowly.

6.  You are done.  Plug the unit back into the power source and turn it on.  If the tube is working properly, the modeling lamp will come on, and the unit will fire when the TEST button is pressed.
